“Track Six:” Romeo and Juliet
A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade, laying everybody low with a love song that he made… Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade, says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"
This was not Romeo’s standard pick up line, but Romeo was not in his normal state.
Until quite recently, actually, he was courting a young lady he thought was surely his forever. Of course, she was the cousin of the young woman he originally wanted… but that’s beside the point. Because once he saw young Juliet, Romeo’s heart was suddenly healed. Or, at the very least, numbed by her good looks and all of the free wine at the party where they met.
You see, young Romeo tended to court his love interests by taking exceptional care with his words. In fact (and only in secret), Juliet still frequently replayed the exquisitely crafted voicemail Romeo recorded beneath her bedroom window on the night of the party.
Romeo had also penned an exceptional series of texts that made Rosaline weak at the knees, which, unfortunately for Romeo, Juliet knew all about. Romeo still kicks himself for going after Rosaline first, convinced that she is what contributed to his short-lived romance with Juliet.
But timing is, as they say- everything.
You see, once Juliet realized she was only a rebound to Romeo’s affections for her cousin- Juliet decided to end things. Quickly. And so wrapped up her brief tenure with Romeo, the boy about town.
Now Juliet must cross her fingers and say a prayer before expertly sneaking around town in the hopes of avoiding a run-in with the newly single Romeo whilst hitting the bars with her friends. Which is, of course, where she sees him next…
Hidden amongst the crowded pub scene, Juliet looks on as Romeo approaches a new girl at the bar. Juliet’s friend notes the late hour and whispers in her ear, “She’s a last call-last chance if I’ve ever seen one. You’re better off with out him. Trust me.”
But the truth behind missed opportunities of young love, are often blinded by “what-ifs” and “Should-haves.” Juliet can only shrug… wondering if she really is better off without him. And so, Juliet and her friend down their drinks, head to the door, and slip out behind Romeo and his Last Call Maiden before the house lights can come up and shine a light on their whereabouts.
Before she goes, from the doorway to the street, Juliet turns to see Romeo whisper into the ear of his next obsession, "You and me babe, how about it?"
